Welcome

Well another semester is upon us and this is the first time that I can say that I’m looking forward to it. Now when I heard that we wear going to have to sign up for Twitter I pretty much freaked out. Then when I heard that we wear going to have to create a Blog I was like no way that is my wife’s job! But when I read the talk by President Clark about having faith in the things we do here at BYU-Idaho I thought to myself that blogging and Twittering definitely fall into that category. So with much faith I would like to welcome you to “Twitter me this, Twitter me that!” for my COMM 150 class. This is going to be place where I will be putting my thoughts about the home work and the things we talk about in class. You as readers are more than welcome to respond to the things that I have to say. Well let’s get started………

NVC (Non Verbal Communication)

I just got done watching Will and Grace without the sound on to see what I could tell was going on by them only using NVC. It was really interesting because even though I did not hear what they wear saying I still could tell what was going on. Above I provide a clip, turn down your volume and she what you can tell is going on by looking at the NVC that is going on. I recommend that every one try this out on one of your favorite sitcoms.

The Close Talker

So yesterday after the group did the demonstrations between guys and girls bubble the only thing that I could think of was the close talker on Seinfeld. This is a great example of some one that does not follow the norm. I know for me that when someone gets to close I will step back, it wakes me feel very uncomfortable.

YES YOU CAN!!!

What a great presentation that we had today on the self-concept. It really made me think about how I never tell myself that I’m capable of doing things that I don’t think I can do. So for the rest of this semester I’m going to tell myself YES YOU CAN! Now I know a lot of people up here in Idaho don’t like Obama but this is a man that is great at telling himself, YES YOU CAN!! I mean look at what those three words did for him. Now I know that the slogan was Yes We Can! But it is the same thing. He was able to get people to believe in themselves to make a change. So if those three words wear abele to get him into office what can those three words do for us. YES YOU CAN!!!!

The About me Project

Wow what a great opportunity we had to get to know each other. It was great to see a side of every one that we would not have had the opportunity to see without this project. Below are some pictures from the slide show I did. Enjoy the pictures.

Complements

Over the weekend we were asked to give compliments to three people. We were asked to give a compliment to a complete stranger and two compliments to other people that we know. When I first heard that we were going to have to give a compliment to a complete stranger I freaked out. I thought to myself that there is no way I’m going to be able to walk up to someone that I don’t know and give them a compliment about them. I also thought to myself that I could not go up to some one of the opposite sex and give a compliment because they might think that I was hitting on them. As you know I married so I did not feel comfortable going up to some one of the opposite sex so I was limited to men only for my random person compliment. So I thought to myself how I was going to go about giving these complements.

The first compliment that I gave out was easy, I told my wife that she did a great job making diner that night. She was very surprised because I don’t tell her that very often and it really made her night. The next compliment that I gave out was I gave my mom a call and told her thank you for everything that she has done for me in the past. This too made her night and she told me how lucky she was to have me as her son. Next came the dreaded random person compliment. I don’t know why but for some reason going up to someone random and trying to strike up a conversation is hard enough as it is let only giving them a complement. I think the reason for me is that I’m afraid of what they are going to think of me. Are they going to think that I’m crazy or are they going to think I’m trying to become there friend? So as I was sitting in church today I thought to myself that this would be a great place to give someone I don’t know a compliment. After sacrament I went up to one of the speakers and said thank you for the talk you gave today. The person’s response was “Thank you…I really don’t like giving talks it is good to know that people liked what I had to say”. The one thing that I noticed is that giving people complements does two things, one it boost their confidence and two that they are not ever really going to give you a negative response back. All in all, this assignment was hard for me but very rewarding.
